TEMPORARY STATUS
Studying in Canada
For Students:
Foreign students* need a study permit to study at a
university or college or to take any academic course, professional or vocational
training if their study program lasts more than six months. As well foreign
student is required to apply for a temporary Resident visa to enter to Canada
issued by a visa office abroad.
If the student is a family or staff member of a foreign representative to Canada
accredited by the Department of Foreign Affaires and International Trade, he/she
does not need to obtain a study permit. National or permanent residents of the
United States residents of Greenland or residents of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon
may apply at any entry port if they have an acceptance letter from a Canadian
educational institution. Minor children attending canadian pre-schools, primary
or secondary schools, except for children accompanying parents who are in Canada
as visitors do not need a study permit as well.
Foreign students must meet certain requirements when applying for study permit.
He/she must have an acceptance letter from the educational institution, undergo
a medical examination and must prove to the officer that he/she is able to pay
the tuition fees for the course or programme to pursue, to support financially
himself/herself and any family members and to cover the transportation cost.
Foreign student may renew the study permit by applying 90 days before the
expiration date.
